Seboeis Plantation

 Early History

The following early history was taken from the book titled "Seboeis Plantation Pictorial History: A Look at Seboeis Plantation From the Early 1800s through 2010"

"TWP 2 Range8 was originally purchased from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts by a man named William C. Whitney on February 12, 1821. The ridge where the first people settled about 1835 was known as Whitney Ridge. A reference is made in the History of Penobscot County that the settlement was organized as Whitney Ridge Plantation about 1836 but was not maintained and records were lost. The east half of TWP 3 R 8 , the part that was settled, was eventually purchased in 1840 for $3,600.00 by two merchants from Bangor who resold it to settlers about or after the civil war. John Smart Jr. moved to Whitney Ridge in 1836...seven miles from the Piscataquis River and between Seboeis Stream and South Branch Lake. They were one of the first 8 homestead settlers. Thomas DeWitt testified before R.R. Haskins, J.P.  of Bangor re the settlement at Whitney Ridge "...that all 8 families, including Nicholas Bussell, John Smart, Charles Spearing, Patrick Owen, William Hook, Charles Smart, John Smart Jr, and Rufus DeWitt have good settling land and have established a school for several years. We have made a passable road through said half of township and to the main road to Howland. Three of the settlers have moved off since June 1836 and the place left by them are and have been occupied by other settlers"...signed in Bangor 7 August 1845. (Augusta Archives-Frances Deacon). Whitney Ridge was first divided into 4 parcels...160 acres each. In 1850, the population of Whitney Ridge (T3 Range8) was 15. In 1860 the population was 17. In 1890 TWP3 R* was organized by the Penobscot County Commissioners as Seboeis Plantation and has remained so ever since."
